How Amazon FBA Storage Fees Work
Amazon charges monthly storage fees based on the cubic footage your inventory occupies in their fulfillment centers. The rate varies by size tier (standard vs. oversized) and time of year — Q4 (October–December) rates are roughly 3× the off-peak rate for standard-size items due to peak demand for warehouse space.
Storage fees are charged on the 15th of each month and are applied to inventory stored in fulfillment centers during the preceding month. The fee is calculated as: total cubic feet × monthly rate.
Aged Inventory Surcharges
Beyond standard monthly fees, Amazon levies additional surcharges on slow-moving inventory. Items stored 181–270 days may face a moderate surcharge, while those at 271+ days face a higher per-unit surcharge. Items reaching 365 days trigger long-term storage fees assessed at the greater of $6.90/cubic foot or $0.15/unit.
The best defense is a strong inventory turnover strategy: reorder in smaller, more frequent batches and use removal orders before inventory crosses the 181-day threshold.
Tips to Minimize Storage Costs
- Order inventory in smaller batches with higher turnover rather than sending 12 months of stock at once
- Run lightning deals or coupons to clear slow-moving units before the 181-day mark
- Use the Inventory Performance Index (IPI) in Seller Central — scores below 450 can result in storage limits
- Consider FBM as a backup for slow-moving SKUs to avoid warehousing fees
- Use the reorder point calculator to avoid overstocking
