Watch Time Needed Calculator

Calculate how many more views and videos you need to reach 4,000 (or 3,000) public watch hours for YPP eligibility.

Typical YouTube avg: 35–50%

How Watch Hours Are Calculated

YouTube counts public watch hours — only views from public videos count, not unlisted or private content. Watch hours accumulate based on how long viewers actually watch each video (not just click), weighted by retention. A 10-minute video watched to 50% retention generates 5 minutes of watch time per view.

The formula: Watch Hours = Views × Average Duration × Retention ÷ 60. This means three variables directly control your progress: getting more views, making longer videos (up to an optimal length for your content type), and improving viewer retention. Improving retention from 35% to 50% on the same view count is equivalent to gaining 43% more watch hours without making a single additional video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does watch time from old videos still count?

Yes, but only from the last 12 months. YouTube uses a rolling 12-month window for the watch hour requirement, not the total lifetime of your channel. Views on a video posted 3 years ago still count if they happened within the last 12 months. This is why keeping your older videos public and findable matters.

What's the fastest way to increase watch hours?

Longer videos with high retention generate the most watch time per view. A well-structured 15-minute video with 50% retention generates 3× the watch hours of a 5-minute video with the same retention and view count. Focus on content that naturally warrants 10–20 minutes (tutorials, reviews, deep-dives) rather than artificially padding short videos.
