mL to Syringe Units Calculator

Convert milliliters (mL) to syringe scale units for U-100, U-40, or U-500 scales. Formula: units = mL × scale factor. Scale reference only — not medical advice or injection instructions.

Understanding Syringe Unit Scales

mL and Syringe Units

mL measures liquid volume. Syringe units are graduation markings on a syringe scale. Different scales use different unit-to-mL ratios. Always verify which scale is in use before performing a conversion.

U-100: syringe units = mL × 100

U-40: syringe units = mL × 40

U-500: syringe units = mL × 500

Frequently Asked Questions

1How do I convert mL to syringe units?

Multiply the volume in mL by the units-per-mL scale. On a U-100 scale: syringe units = mL × 100. On U-40: syringe units = mL × 40.

2What is a U-100 scale?

U-100 is a syringe marking convention where 100 units equals 1 milliliter. It is one of several possible scale conventions.

3How do I convert syringe units back to mL?

Divide the units by the scale factor. On U-100: mL = units ÷ 100. On U-40: mL = units ÷ 40.

4Are syringe units the same as mg?

No. Syringe units measure volume, not mass. The mass contained in a given number of units depends on the solution concentration (mg/mL).

Converting Millilitres to Syringe Units

Most dosing references state volume in millilitres, while insulin syringes are graduated in units. The conversion is fixed and depends only on the syringe scale:

U-100 units = Volume (mL) × 100

So 0.4 mL is 40 units, 0.15 mL is 15 units, and 0.07 mL is 7 units. The relationship is linear with no rounding built in, which means very small volumes fall between the printed graduations and cannot be read precisely on a 1 mL barrel.

When the Number Falls Between Marks

A 1 mL U-100 barrel is typically printed with a mark every 2 units. A calculated value of 7 units therefore sits between graduations. Two options exist: move to a 0.3 mL barrel, which is marked in single units, or reconstitute at a lower concentration so the same mass occupies a larger, more readable volume.

Reverse Conversion and Cross-Checking

Volume (mL) = Units ÷ 100

Running the conversion in both directions is a cheap way to catch a decimal error. If you calculate 0.25 mL → 25 units, converting back should return 0.25 mL. A mismatch by a factor of ten almost always means a decimal place moved during the original calculation.

Educational Use & Safety

Important: This tool converts between volume and syringe graduations. It performs arithmetic only, has no knowledge of any substance, and is not medical advice. Verify the scale printed on your syringe barrel (U-100 vs U-40) before use.
