How Browser-Side Conversion Works
Unlike most online converters that upload your files to a server, these tools process everything directly on your device:
- You select or drop files — the browser reads them into memory using the File API. Nothing is transmitted over the network.
- JavaScript decodes the source image — for standard formats (JPG, PNG, WebP), the browser's native image decoder handles this instantly. For HEIC, the
heic2anylibrary decodes Apple's HEVC-compressed data. - The browser re-encodes to your target format — using the Canvas API for image-to-image conversion, or
jsPDFfor PDF output. - You download the result — the converted file is generated as a downloadable blob. Your original file was never uploaded anywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript and the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device. There's no upload, no server, no account, and no data collection.
Which format should I convert to?
For web use: WebP or AVIF for the best compression. For universal sharing: JPG. For lossless quality or transparency: PNG. For documents and printing: PDF. For iPhone photos that won't open: convert HEIC to any of the above.
Do these tools work on mobile?
Yes. All 10 tools work in any modern browser including Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Performance may be slower on mobile for large files.
Is there a file size or batch limit?
No hard limit. Since conversion runs in your browser, very large batches or files over 50MB may be slower on devices with limited memory. Process large batches in groups for best results.
Are these tools free?
Yes. All 10 converters are completely free with no limits, no watermarks, no sign-up, and no premium tier.
What about AVIF browser support?
AVIF viewing is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, and Edge 85+. Browser-based encoding requires Canvas API support for AVIF, which is available in Chrome and Edge. If your browser doesn't support AVIF encoding, use WebP as an alternative.
