How Cat Years to Human Years Works

Cats age much faster in their first two years of life. According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a 1-year-old cat is approximately 15 in human years, and a 2-year-old cat is about 24. After that, each additional cat year adds roughly 4 human years.

This is different from dogs, where size significantly affects aging rate. Curious about dog ages? Try our Dog Years Calculator or the all-in-one Pet Age Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is a 3-year-old cat in human years?

A 3-year-old cat is approximately 28 in human years. The first year counts as 15, the second adds 9, and each year after adds about 4.

Do indoor cats age differently than outdoor cats?

Indoor cats tend to live longer (15–20 years) compared to outdoor cats (2–5 years on average) due to fewer hazards. The aging formula is the same, but indoor cats are more likely to reach senior and geriatric stages.

Is the "7 years per human year" rule accurate for cats?

No. The 7:1 ratio is a myth for both cats and dogs. Cats mature rapidly in years 1–2 and then age more slowly. This calculator uses the AAHA-recommended formula for accurate results.
